Prayer news for Ethiopia-Bombing in Merkato Section of Addis Ababa.
The explosion occurred at approximately 16:00 September 3 in a video parlor in the Merkato section of Addis Ababa. Ethiopian Federal Police report six people were killed and 29 injured in the event. Because of the severity of some of the injuries, additional deaths are likely. Police report no American citizens or other foreigners were among the casualties. While the cause of the explosion is still under investigation, police assess it to be a malicious act – likely an improvised explosive device planted in the venue – and similar in nature to previous explosive incidents occurring in Addis Ababa.
The Merkato was the site of a previous bombing at a bank in February, 2008 that resulted in no casualties. Because of these and other incidents, the Embassy recommends that Americans avoid the Merkato. The Embassy also takes this opportunity to remind Americans to review their personal safety and security posture and to remain vigilant. Americans are urged to be cautious when frequenting prominent public places and landmarks, especially in the coming weeks as the Ethiopian New Year (September 11) and the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 bombings approach. Americans are advised to beware of unattended baggage or packages left in any location, including in minibuses and taxis, and to avoid crowded unsecured public places with poor access controls and security screening.
Ruth Cremer our beloved missionary,
Ruth came as a young school teacher at 24 in 1954 and served here for 54 years. The Oldest missionaries presently in Ethiopia, were honored to give substantial help in planning her memorial service which was held here with four relatives coming out from New Zealand to celebrate her life with us. She most recently has been involved in Bible Translation and, with her Ethiopian team, completed the Kafa New Testament in 2001. As a girl she had been impacted by reading the life story of Mary Slessor, and she leaves a legacy of commitment and dedication for all of us. Determination was not the least of her gifts!
